Exotic traditions
When Germans colonized the area now known as Saxony, the Slavic people living there were gradually assimilated. But in the region of Lusatia, the Slavic tribe of the Sorbs was able to preserve its own identity. And without centuries of mining in the Ore Mountains region, Saxony would not have become such a powerful and important region of Germany. It is no surprise that mining traditions have lived on and informed large parts of the social life along the Saxon Silver Route. While the traditions are centered on Easter, the mining traditions are concentrated on the Christmas season. So it is great being in Saxony when Christianity’s highest festivals are celebrated. |
